Did you know that one American home falls victim to a burglary every 13 seconds? With that being said, 66% of all yearly burglaries are home break-ins. The police only manage to solve around 13% of all reported cases of burglary. At this rate, 3 out of 4 homes in the Unites States will be broken into in the next two decades. World wide identity theft is also on the rise.
The following tips could help you if you believe that your home could benefit from more or better security measures. Close to 35% of burglars use the front door to break into a home, and 23% sneak in through a first-floor window, these are the first places you should start enhancing the security of.
TIP #1: UPGRADE (ALL) YOUR LOCKS
Burglars look for properties that are easy to break into. Sturdy locks are excellent deterrents because potential intruders will incur the risk of getting caught in the act and will most likely move on to their next victim.
TIP #2: FIX/RE-KEY YOUR LOCKS
While upgrading your locks is good for households with outdated locks, you may also simply need to repair or re-key some of your locks that are still good but need a few quick fixes.
Most homeowners have a hard time figuring out whether they should replace their locks or have their locks re-keyed. This is usually a decision that a professional licensed locksmith at ACR Lock & Key should have no problem making.
Schedule an appointment with a professional locksmith and have them assess the lock on your home. They will let you know whether or not you need to replace your locks or just have them worked on. The locksmith should have no problem fixing a broken lock, removing the cylinder and changing the pins, or installing a new lock, if necessary.
TIP #3: NEVER LEAVE THE DOORS UNLOCKED
Never leave your home without properly securing all locks and windows, no matter how short of time you will be gone. Smart lock systems that allow you to control your locks from a remote distance come in handy when you are forced to leave in a hurry or when you just can't remember whether or not you locked the door on your way out.
TIP #4: MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK OCCUPIED
Create the illusion that you are always home. Leave the lights turned on at night(use a random timer) and do not forget about the exterior, senor lights as well.
TIP #5: HIDE YOUR WIRES
Phone lines and electrical wires should be hidden from burglars who might try to disarm your alarm by cutting the wires.
TIP #6: GET A HOME ALARM SYSTEM
If you do not already have one installed, you should get one. You should be able to find a great variety of options that fit your needs and budget. Don't forget to arm the alarm!
TIP #7: SECURE THE GARAGE DOOR
If your home is connected with your garage via a separate door, you have even more reasons to properly check and strengthen the security on it. Always leave your car parked in the garage to make burglars think you are home.
TIP #8: USE KEY LOCK BOXES
Never keep your spare keys in the mailbox or under a potted plant. Install a key lockbox similar to the ones used by real estate agents. These locks rely on combination locks that will make potential burglars' job even more difficult. The keys will come in extremely handy in case you ever find yourself in need of a backup key.
This blog post contains my personal opinion and views on YELP reviews and their software process. Please feel free to have your own personal opinions and conclusions on this topic.
I have spoken to YELP several instances on this topic and every time I get the same response(b.s basically) that their review software is automated and they can not control it or do anything about their software unrecommending your legitimate honest customer reviews. Obviously the YELP review software is not fair to either the business nor the consumer. Customers take their time to leave feedback for other Yelp users and Yelp goes behind them and unrecommends their reviews. This is unfair in so many ways and in MY OPINION it is a way for YELP to strong arm business into buying YELP ads. I even had a YELP representative call me and talk me into trying YELP ads and that she would submit a ticket and get the review situation handled on the back end. Even though I was skeptical she talked me into it. Two weeks into paying for YELP ads still no help with the unrecommended review situation so I email the representative back and she then tells me that I could probably get better faster results if I just contacted YELP myself instead of waiting on the ticket that she had supposedly submitted on our behalf. At that point I knew it was a waste of time and that I had in fact been lied to but nonetheless I gave YELP a call..I got just what I expected and just what I'm always given when I try to address this issue, the YELP review software is automated unbiased software to make user experience better..WHAT A CROCK OF CRAP!!!!!I then immediately turned off the YELP ad that I was talked into.
Now keep in mind that I'm not talking about one or two reviews or even ten. I'm talking about having almost 70 legitimate customer reviews and YELP had unrecommended all but 10 of those reviews. This is unacceptable and ridiculous!! And most of those reviews were recommended at some point in time and then all of the sudden they're not, that makes no sense!! So whether you're a business on YELP or a consumer this in unfair and yes it is purposely taking away from a company's good reputation and then you want me to pay you money for an ad, I don't think so YELP! YELP's response to this just earlier today was that a company's business is not based off the reviews. Well excuse me YELP but that is incorrect!!! If I'm looking for a business and I have two businesses that I'm looking at and one has three 5-star reviews and the other has 60+ good customer reviews, well that's most likely the one I'm going to choose. It shows more experience with good customer service and more established business.
If you are a YELP consumer, please always scroll all the way down to see ALL the reviews when looking for a business. This is where you will find all of the unrecommended reviews. YELP, PLEASE FIX THE REVIEW SOFTWARE AS IT IS UNFAIR TO BOTH THE BUSINESS AND CONSUMER!!!!!!!
LOCKSMITH SCAM!!! PLEASE BEWARE!!!!!
We want to let our customers know that there is a company that advertises to be affiliated with us and they are NOT! We have not given them permission to use our name and just hang up on us every time that we call to have them remove it. The company name is 24/7 Locksmith and this is the link that they use: https://www.247locksmiths.io/
ACR Lock & Key is not affiliated with them and they are a scam company! BEWARE!!
A first priority in buying a new home is rekeying the locks that are existing from the previous owner and/or the building company that built your home. Countless times when arriving to a job such as a rekey for example, many homes are master-keyed meaning that whoever built the home or whoever owned the house previous to you has multiple keys that can still work your locks and worse come into your house whenever they want! Realtors as well get homes that they are listing master-keyed to their company key so that they don't have to carry around multiple keys when showing homes.
At A.C.R we strongly and firmly believe in peace of mind. The feeling of going to sleep at night in your home knowing that nobody but you has a key is important.
Being a family owned and operated company is what gives people a basis of honesty and trust.
When deciding on your new home keep in mind that your locks can deceive you. Just because they work perfectly fine and the builder or previous owner hands you a set of keys doesn't mean that it's the only set of keys. Keep your family and peace of mind safe by getting your new home rekeyed.
Difficulty in turning a key, improper latching, and knob problems etc. are all lock problems most of us believe. Have you too experienced any of these? Wondering what the problem could be other than a problem with your lock itself? You might be surprised to know that 80 percent of the time, these problems have no link to the lock. Here are a few issues that may be the cause of the problem:
The pins within a lock are matched with the keys for a smooth operation. Thus, you might experience problems if you have lost your original key and are now operating the lock with a duplicate one. Any variation can cause a huge difference, therefore when duplicates are made, the key can become nonfunctional. Additionally, when duplicates are made from duplicates, the variation increases and the problem persists and prolongs. A better idea would be to get your lock rekeyed, and have the locksmith make as many keys as you need. Professionally-made keys are identical and do not vary in any manner.
Even if the door is installed and hung properly, careless installation of the strike will cause problems. Bolts and latches should be centered with their respective strikes. Additionally, the strike for the entry lock latch needs to be positioned so that the dead latch plunger does not fall in the strikes opening. The strikes should also be installed with screws long enough to anchor the strike into the framing behind the jamb. The screws should be at least 3 inches long.
Poorly mounted or lose hinges can cause a lot of problems. Three hinges with four screws are usually attached to a standard door jamb. When these hinges are not attached properly, it creates a problem. At least one screw attaching the hinge to the jamb should be of sufficient length.
If you fail to securely mount the hinges, the door will sag and will interfere with the alignment of the strikes and lock. Calling a locksmith for help in such a case is recommended. The first thing they will do is check the gap between the jamb and the door. This will help the locksmith to identify the problem and make the necessary repairs and adjustments.
Most people who need a locksmith in an emergency situation are the people who are vulnerable to fall prey to nonlocal scam so called locksmiths. These are the companies that are at the top of the ad lists and they have no company reviews. These companies are able to pay for ads on Google and other sites without providing any type of documentation about their company because they are willing to pay the big bucks for these ads. Seems a bit unfair not only to legitamate local locksmiths but also to consumers as well. Legitamate local locksmith businesses who want a place on the map must prove who they are, verify their address and numerous other things. Practically they are put through the wringer so to speak before they are allowed a place on the map. All the while locksmith scam companies that are not even local or have the appropriate licensing are paying to be on the top of these ads on search lists when looking for a locksmith without any type of validation. These companies are scamming and taking advantage of customers who are locked out in an emergency situation and pick the first listing that pops up on their phone. There is not anywhere for these customers to go back and leave negative reviews or comments about these companies either so they just keep getting away with it. Customers need to do themselves a favor and only pick a local locksmith company that they are able to read reviews about.
The following is a list of tips from the Better Business Bureau that they recommend you use when choosing a locksmith:
Tips for Choosing a Locksmith:
Possible Scam Scenarios
The way that your deadbolt strike plate is installed is going to determine just how secure your door is. Your deadbolt lock is your main source of security from intruders. Most deadbolts have a 1 inch bolt or bar that extends into the door frame after the door is closed and locked. If the deadbolt is a good quality lock installed on a good door the chances are slim the door is going to break if someone tries to kick the door in. The weakness then becomes the door frame the deadbolt is locked into.
This is where the importance of having a properly installed deadbolt strike plate comes in to play. The deadbolt strike plate acts as an anchor point and means to reinforce the door frame and deter, even prevent the door from being kicked in by intruders. Deadbolt strike plates should always be installed with longer 3 or 4 inch anchor screws that will attach to the 2X4's that actually are the framing for your door and the strike plate is not just attached to the door frame molding. No matter how expensive of a lock that you have, if it's not installed properly, are no more secure than the cheapest lock that you can buy when it's not properly installed either. The bottom line here is that the way that the strike plate is installed (or not installed) will determine the true security of your door.
Locks that are used in millions of homes and residential buildings worldwide are flawed and are easily opened with both a screwdriver and a pair of pliers.
There are more than 20 million smartkey technology locks sold every year. One of the main selling points of the smartkey technology locks is that it has a reprogrammable cylinder that gives owners the ability to reprogram the locks to any key. This feature can be used by apartment managers to change a door lock after a resident vacates or a building manager is terminated, without having to swap out the actual lock or call a locksmith. It can also be used by homeowners to provide temporary access to someone who needs to gain entry to their home for a certain period of time, after which the locks can be changed back to fit the original key. It's a great selling point and consumers fall victim to the "smartkey technology" all over the front of the packaging which leads them to believe they are getting a great high tech high security lock which couldn't be farther from the truth. The truth being that these locks are very insecure and can be be opened in 15 seconds or less with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. It's not a pin-tumbler lock so that it doesn't have the inherent physical strength to block the plug from turning when you do certain things.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from the smartkey technology locks. They are not secure and can fail at any time often leaving customers locked out of their homes because the cylinder fails and their key will no longer work and the lock has to be replaced. Also, if you accidentally forget your keys inside and get locked out, there's no picking the lock open since it's not a pin-tumbler lock. The lock will have to be damaged and then replaced. There's nothing smart about buying the smartkey technology locks. These locks are junk and a waste of money.

The truth of the matter is that if someone wants in your home, they will get in your home. The goal of locks is to impede the progress of the intruder long enough to be detected.
It is imperative that you have deadbolts installed on your home. While most regular knob and lever locks offer some degree of security, a deadbolt will deter or delay a break-in. However, one issue that occurs when a deadbolt is installed incorrectly is that the hole on the frame of the door, where the bolt goes when the door is locked, is often not drilled deep enough to allow the bolt to fully engage. If the bolt of a deadbolt lock isn't extended completely, the deadbolt is pretty ineffective as is any lock that is not properly installed.
Make sure to check your windows. If they slide open and are accessible from the outside, do you have a second form of lock on them other than the one that was provided with them? Most of the locks provided with the windows are only latches that simply hold a window closed, but don't really lock them. Most of them can be manipulated from the outside and opened with minimal effort.
Check your sliding glass doors. A traditional patio door is the most vulnerable entry point since it's usually in the back of the house, hidden from the watchful eyes of neighbors. These doors are usually only secured by the same type of latch that secures your windows, and many are installed incorrectly and can actually be lifted out of the frame from the outside even when locked. Just like your windows, make sure that you have a secondary form of lock on your sliding glass patio doors. Even a door pin, which helps to secure the movable door to the stationary door, and lessens the possibility of lifting the door out of it's frame.
If you have a gate that leads to the rear of your home, secure it with a lock other than what's typically provided. Depending on your brand of house locks, you can purchase locks for your gates that can be keyed up to the same key as your house locks so that you don't have to carry around more keys than necessary. Plenty of outdoor lighting is always a great idea as well.
Update your locks and add deadbolts. Locks are like anything else that you purchase in the sense that you get what you pay for. If you buy a $10 lock, well then you have a $10 lock. Why would you spend thousands of dollars for the stuff in our house and secure it with the cheapest lock you can find? One you have a good lock that's installed correctly, maintain it be keeping it lubricated and tightened to the door.
Keys and locks should be changed anytime you move into a new house, apartment or office regardless of when you are told it was rekeyed last; when you give out keys to people like contractors and repairmen or anyone that is not a regular key holder because you never know if they have had your key duplicated; when you lose a key; and just for safety purposes, once every couple of years.
There are a number of different door locks on the market today. From door knob locks to deadbolts and keyless locks, there is a type of lock to suit every door and security need. It will only take a few minutes to learn the types of locks that are available on the market today. Whether you are interested in updating your locks or you are just curious about the technology available, this article presents an informative look at several door locking options.
Door Handle Locks
This type of lock is the least secure. It is simply a lock that is contained within the handle of a door. It works by preventing the handle from rotating. This type of lock is usually used on bathroom doors and other inside entryways because it is so easy to break. Another lock of this kind consists of a button that is found immediately next to the door handle, and it works in the same way.
Deadbolts provide security through the use of a solid metal cylinder that protrudes through the door jam and into the wall to completely secure the door. Deadbolts are often found in use with door handle locks to add a second level of protection. Deadbolts require a key to lock them from the outside and for most residential homes deadbolts provide more than enough security for doors leading outside when properly installed.
Keyless locks work just like their name implies. Using no key for entry, the door is locked and unlocked using a code that is entered into a keypad. This adds yet another level of security and keyless locks typically employ a deadbolt. Keyless locks are often found in commercial buildings and other places where heightened security is a necessity. Keyless locks are found in building doors and car doors alike.
Electric lock devices work like any lock, only they are not manually applied. The mechanism that locks and unlocks the door is running through electronics, but they can be opened with either a key or through a code on a keypad.
A combination lock is much like a keyless entry, only the keypad functions through a push button mechanism. Rather than a digital or electronic coding device, the keypad on combination locks triggers the movement of a deadbolt mechanically.
The many types of door locks correspond to different doors found in buildings and cars and to the need for extra security at some locations. From simple locks found inside the home to extremely high tech electric locking systems found in sensitive areas, there is a door lock for every need and preference.
An automobile key also referred to as a car key, is a key that is used to open and/or start a car/automobile. There are many different types of automotive car keys including VATS keys, transponder keys and smart keys/key fobs that have been designed for use. All these types of car keys are made one of two major automotive key cutting techniques.
TRADITIONAL MECHANICAL-CUT AUTOMOTIVE KEYS:
These are the most popular or common car key type. Mechanical automobile keys are cut using a traditional key cutting machine in the same way that locksmiths make keys for homes, safes and regular locks. Mechanical car key cutting was the only technique used to make automotive car keys until the late 20th century when the laser key cutting technique gained popularity. The increased security associated with the laser cut keys are making mechanical cut keys less common on newer automobiles.
LASER CUT AUTOMOTIVE KEYS:
These keys are also referred to as internal cut or sidewinder keys. Laser cut keys are the most advanced of the two automotive key cutting techniques. Laser cut keys offer numerous security advantages. They have lock cylinders that are harder to pick compared to the traditional automotive key and are difficult to duplicate because they are manufactured using expensive, highly specialized software and high-tech laser key cutting machines. More automobile manufacturers are now using laser cut keys for their automobiles.
COMMON TYPES OF AUTOMOTIVE KEYS:
GETTING AN AUTOMOTIVE KEY FROM AN AUTOMOTIVE LOCKSMITH VS CAR DEALERSHIP
When it comes to your children and your home, it's important to take precautions for both your child and your home. In the society that we live in today, often both parents have to work leaving many children to arrive at home alone and with the keys to your home. This could be a problem and potentially a future security risk. Here's why:
You see the ads that read "19 Dollar Locksmith" and "$15 Service Charge Locksmith" but don't be fooled! Many unethical locksmiths use the bait and switch con to get your call. You see the ad on your smart phone that says $15 locksmith......wrong! You are being lured into a web by unethical people that are counting on your desperation and on you trying to be frugal with your hard-earned cash. When they show up they change the price. By how much you ask? Usually about 400 to 500 percent! So that $15 phone quote turns into $150 instantly! Not only are the unethical locksmiths counting on your desperation and trust....sometimes they actually bully customers into paying by not giving you your keys until you have paid them!
An ethical and professional locksmith that wants your repeat business will give you an accurate quote on the phone. Reputable locksmiths need your repeat business and want to provide good prices and great customer service. Call around and find a local locksmith company that is registered with your local Chamber of Commerce or that is a member of a Professional Locksmith organization. Ask their prices, hours, and most of all ask about their business and professional licensing. The best locksmith is one who cares about your concerns and wants to help.
Avoid being scammed by finding a reputable locksmith that has good references and who is licensed and insured.
Thieves are in and out of a home in less than 6 minutes, anything you can do to slow them down or prevent them from getting in completely, can make all the difference.
